At least two persons, including a minor, were killed and two others sustained injuries in a powerful explosion in Assam’s Jorhat district on Saturday, sparking concern ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
The incident took place in the Raja Maidam area of Jorhat town during the afternoon. According to police officials, the victims were immediately rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, where two of them were declared brought dead.
The deceased have been identified as Noor Mohammad (45), a scrap dealer, and an eight-year-old child. The injured, including two women, are currently undergoing treatment and are reported to be out of danger.
Initial suspicion pointed towards a gas cylinder blast; however, authorities later ruled out the possibility after no evidence of a cylinder was found at the site. Police now suspect that the explosion may have been caused by some form of explosive material.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the blast could be linked to scrap materials handled by the deceased. Officials believe the explosion may have occurred while dismantling or handling an unidentified object containing explosive substances.
The blast created panic among local residents, many of whom rushed out of their homes after hearing the loud explosion. Security agencies have cordoned off the area, and forensic teams have been deployed to collect evidence.
Senior police officials stated that a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion. The incident has heightened security concerns in the region, particularly in view of the impending Assam Assembly elections.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and report any suspicious objects or activities to the police.
