The Indian National Congress is set to contest around 100 seats in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections as part of a broader alliance with five opposition parties, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi announced on Friday.
Addressing reporters, Gogoi said the party has worked out a seat-sharing arrangement under which approximately 26 seats will be left for its alliance partners. He added that in a couple of constituencies, the alliance may witness “friendly contests” between partners, indicating a flexible approach to seat allocation.
The Congress leader emphasized that the formation of a multi-party alliance reflects a growing effort among opposition forces to present a united front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. He expressed confidence that the alliance would be able to channel public sentiment and offer a credible alternative in the elections.
The alliance is expected to include a mix of regional and smaller parties, as the Congress seeks to consolidate anti-incumbency votes and strengthen its electoral prospects. Political observers believe that such coordination among opposition groups could play a crucial role in shaping the electoral dynamics in Assam.
With the state heading toward a high-stakes electoral contest, the Congress’s announcement signals the beginning of an intensified campaign phase, with alliances and seat-sharing arrangements likely to influence the outcome significantly.
