Tarique Rahman Likely to Prioritise India Ties for Bangladesh’s Growth: BJ Mahanta

Former Assam Director General of Police BJ Mahanta has said Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is likely to maintain strong ties with India, stressing that such cooperation is vital for Bangladesh’s economic progress and regional stability.
Mahanta noted that Rahman’s recent moves suggest a pragmatic foreign policy approach towards New Delhi despite political changes in Dhaka. He said Bangladesh’s growth prospects remain closely linked to constructive engagement with India.
Mahanta contrasted the current signals from Dhaka with the approach of previous interim leadership under Muhammad Yunus, which he claimed had attempted to minimise India’s role in Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War. According to him, Rahman has indicated a different stance by paying tribute at the Liberation War memorial and appointing a minister dedicated to liberation history—steps viewed as acknowledging India’s historical contribution.
He further emphasised that geographic realities, economic interdependence and shared security concerns make cooperative India–Bangladesh relations indispensable. Observers believe that while Dhaka may pursue a balanced foreign policy, it is unlikely to adopt measures that would significantly strain ties with New Delhi in the near future.
