‘Prove it in court’: Assam CM dares Opposition over asset claims, unveils Majuli projects

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday challenged the Opposition to substantiate its allegations regarding his personal assets in a court of law, asserting that he would not respond to what he described as “baseless political accusations” outside the legal framework. The Chief Minister made the remarks while inaugurating and laying foundation stones for a series of development projects in Majuli district.
Responding to allegations by Congress leaders that he and his family had amassed large tracts of land across the State, Sarma said all his assets had been declared in his election affidavits in accordance with law and were open to public scrutiny. “If anyone has evidence against me, let them prove it in court instead of making allegations for political mileage,” he said, adding that he had already initiated legal action against those making what he termed defamatory claims.
During the visit, the Chief Minister unveiled multiple infrastructure and institutional projects aimed at strengthening connectivity and administrative capacity in Majuli. These included new academic and hostel facilities for Majuli University, construction of a Deputy Commissioner’s office complex, a model college, and additional police infrastructure. Sarma also reiterated the government’s commitment to improving road and bridge connectivity to the river island, including progress on major bridge projects linking Majuli with Jorhat, to ensure year-round access.
Highlighting Majuli’s strategic and cultural importance, the Chief Minister said improved infrastructure would boost education, healthcare, tourism and economic activity in the region, while stressing that development would be pursued in consultation with local communities to preserve the island’s unique ecological and cultural heritage.
The sharp exchange between the ruling BJP and the Congress over asset allegations comes amid heightened political activity in the State, with governance, transparency and development emerging as key points of contention ahead of upcoming elections.
