Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that the Assam government will provide free LPG cylinders to eligible households during major festivals such as Bihu and Durga Puja, in a move aimed at offering relief to consumers.
The announcement comes amid rising concerns over LPG supply disruptions and allegations of irregularities in distribution across parts of the state. Addressing the issue, the Chief Minister said the government has intensified inspections, with thousands of checks already carried out and several distributors facing action for violations.
Sarma assured that strict monitoring mechanisms would be put in place to ensure transparency in the distribution process. He added that eligibility cards of beneficiaries would be closely scrutinised so that only deserving households receive the benefit of the scheme.
Officials indicated that the initiative is primarily targeted at economically weaker sections, who are most affected by rising fuel costs. The scheme is expected to be rolled out in a phased manner ahead of the festive season.
The announcement is being viewed as a significant welfare measure, especially in the context of public dissatisfaction over LPG availability. It also reflects the state government’s focus on providing direct benefits to citizens during key cultural occasions.
