India Exports GI-Tagged Limes to UK, Boosting Global Recognition of Local Produce

India has exported Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged limes to the United Kingdom, marking a significant step toward promoting the country’s region-specific agricultural products in international markets.
The export included 500 kilograms of GI-certified limes, comprising 350 kg of Indi lime from Karnataka and 150 kg of Puliyankudi lime from Tamil Nadu. The shipment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority as part of efforts to expand India’s agricultural export basket and strengthen global awareness of GI-tagged products.
Indi lime, grown mainly in Karnataka, is known for its strong aroma, high juice content and balanced acidity. Puliyankudi lime, cultivated in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli region, is valued for its thin peel, strong flavour and high vitamin C content.
Officials said the export reflects the government’s push to promote unique regional produce in overseas markets while creating better income opportunities for farmers. GI tags are granted to products that possess qualities or a reputation linked to their geographical origin.
India currently has hundreds of GI-tagged products across agriculture, handicrafts and textiles. Authorities believe increasing exports of such products will help strengthen India’s position in niche global markets and enhance the international recognition of traditional and locally produced goods.
