Assam Govt to Transfer ₹9,000 Each to 40 Lakh Women Ahead of Assembly Elections

The Assam government has announced that nearly 40 lakh women beneficiaries will receive ₹9,000 each under the Orunodoi Scheme ahead of the 2026 state assembly elections.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement on the occasion of International Women's Day, stating that the amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts through direct benefit transfer.
According to the Chief Minister, the financial assistance will benefit around 40 lakh families across the state. The government is expected to disburse nearly ₹3,600 crore in a single day as part of the initiative.
The Orunodoi Scheme, launched by the Assam government to provide financial support to economically weaker households, offers monthly assistance to families with women designated as the primary beneficiaries. The programme aims to strengthen women’s financial security and improve household welfare.
Officials said the one-time transfer of ₹9,000 includes consolidated assistance under the scheme and additional support announced by the state government.
However, opposition parties have criticised the move, alleging that the financial transfer is aimed at influencing voters ahead of the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for 2026. The state government has rejected the allegations, maintaining that the initiative is part of its continued efforts toward women’s empowerment and social welfare in the state.
