Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday strongly criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a controversial video clip allegedly shared on the Assam BJP’s social media handles, describing it as a dangerous incitement to violence and communal hatred. Vijayan said the visuals and accompanying remarks, which appeared to show Sarma taking a “point-blank” shot at men portrayed as members of a minority community, were “shocking” and posed a serious threat to India’s secular and democratic fabric. He alleged that such content reflected an attempt to normalise hate and violence for political gains and urged democratic forces across the country to resist divisive politics.
The video, which was later deleted amid widespread backlash, has triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties and civil society groups nationwide. The Congress termed the clip “a call to genocide” and demanded immediate judicial and police action, while AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi filed a police complaint alleging genocidal hate speech and violation of Supreme Court guidelines on hate crimes. Several leaders have sought suo motu action by law enforcement agencies, arguing that the imagery and captions were deliberately designed to incite violence against a particular community.
The controversy has intensified political tensions ahead of elections, with critics warning that such messaging could inflame communal passions and undermine constitutional values. The Assam BJP has removed the video following public outrage, but opposition leaders continue to press for accountability, insisting that deletion alone does not absolve responsibility. The Assam Chief Minister’s office has yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations.
