National Textiles Ministers’ Conference in Guwahati to Position India as Global Textile Hub

Guwahati is set to host the National Textiles Ministers’ Conference, a two-day high-level meet aimed at charting a roadmap to position India as a global textile manufacturing hub. The conference, organised by the Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the Assam government, will bring together Union and State Textiles Ministers, senior officials and key stakeholders from across the country.
The conference will be inaugurated by Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, and other dignitaries. It marks a significant moment for the Northeast, with Guwahati hosting a national-level policy discussion on one of India’s largest employment-generating sectors.
Deliberations at the conference will focus on strengthening policy coordination between the Centre and states, boosting investments, expanding exports, and improving infrastructure across the textile value chain. Special emphasis will be laid on technical textiles, sustainability, innovation, and promotion of handlooms and handicrafts, alongside large-scale manufacturing.
Key government initiatives such as the PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks, production-linked incentive schemes, and measures to enhance global competitiveness of Indian textiles will also be reviewed. Officials said the conference aims to align state-level policies with national targets of building a $350-billion textile industry and achieving $100 billion in textile exports in the coming years.
The choice of Guwahati as the venue underlines the government’s focus on integrating the Northeast into the national textile growth story, leveraging the region’s strengths in natural fibres, handloom traditions and skilled artisans.
The conference is expected to conclude with a set of policy recommendations and action points to drive inclusive growth, generate employment and reinforce India’s position in the global textile market.
