Congress Alleges Serious Irregularities in Assam Draft Electoral Roll After Special Revision

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday alleged serious irregularities in the draft electoral roll published after the Special Revision (SR) exercise, claiming that flaws in the process could compromise the credibility of elections in the state.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner of India, expressing concern over what he described as large-scale discrepancies in the draft rolls released on December 30, 2025. He urged the Election Commission to halt the finalisation of the electoral roll until all alleged anomalies are thoroughly examined and rectified.
According to Saikia, feedback from party workers and local residents suggests the unauthorised inclusion of “unknown voters” in several constituencies. He claimed that names have appeared on voter lists at addresses where residents are unaware of such individuals, raising questions about verification during the Special Revision process.
The Congress leader cited instances from Guwahati and Nazira constituency, where voter entries were allegedly found at non-existent or incorrect addresses, and where individuals unfamiliar to local households were listed as electors. Such discrepancies, he said, point to serious procedural lapses.
Saikia further noted that the draft roll reflects a 1.35 per cent increase in electors following additions and deletions during the SR exercise. While revisions are routine, he said the nature of the alleged errors could allow ineligible voters to be enrolled, posing a threat to free and fair elections.
Describing the issue as a grave threat to democratic values, the Congress demanded a transparent probe into the Special Revision process and the removal of all questionable entries before publication of the final electoral roll. The party also called for stronger verification mechanisms and the introduction of a uniform addressing system to prevent similar issues in the future.
The Election Commission of India has opened a window for claims and objections, during which voters can seek corrections to the draft roll. The final electoral roll is expected to be published after the completion of this process, ahead of the upcoming elections.
The Election Commission has not yet issued a detailed response to the Congress’s allegations.
