Assam Police Arrest Woman, Seize Yaba Tablets Worth ₹3 Crore in Cachar

In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, Assam Police have arrested a woman and seized a large consignment of banned Yaba tablets worth approximately ₹3 crore in Cachar district, officials said on Tuesday.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team of Cachar Police conducted an operation in the Jirighat area of the district. During the raid, police intercepted the woman and recovered around 20,000 Yaba tablets concealed in her possession. The synthetic drug, a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine, is banned in India under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The accused was taken into custody and booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. Police officials said she is being interrogated to ascertain her role in the drug supply chain and to identify possible links with inter-state and cross-border narcotics networks operating in the Northeast.
Senior police officials stated that the seized contraband was likely meant for distribution in different parts of Assam and neighbouring states. Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the drugs and the intended destination.
Reacting to the seizure, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the police action and reiterated the state government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against drugs. He said Assam Police have intensified operations to dismantle drug syndicates and protect the youth from substance abuse.
The seizure is part of Assam’s ongoing crackdown on narcotics, with Cachar and other Barak Valley districts increasingly being targeted by law enforcement due to their strategic location and proximity to trafficking routes.
Police said more arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
