Tension gripped parts of the city on Tuesday after members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) clashed with police during a protest against the alleged closure of government schools in Assam.
The protest began at Rajiv Bhawan on GS Road, where students gathered under the banner of the NSUI to oppose what they described as the state government’s move towards the privatisation of education. Following the meeting, the protesters attempted to march towards Dispur to press their demands.
Police personnel, already deployed in large numbers outside the Congress headquarters, put up barricades to stop the procession. The situation turned tense when demonstrators tried to breach the barricades, leading to a brief scuffle between the protesters and security forces.
NSUI Assam unit president Kaushik Kashyap alleged that several members of the student body sustained minor injuries during the confrontation. The organisation criticised the government’s education policies and demanded that government-run schools be protected from closure.
Police officials later brought the situation under control and prevented the march from proceeding towards Dispur. No major damage to public property was reported.
The incident highlights growing student unrest over education policy in the state.
