The Indian National Congress on Thursday asserted that it would return to power in Assam in the 2026 Assembly elections, launching a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over issues related to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and alleged neglect of the state’s hill districts.
Addressing a press conference, Congress leaders said the BJP government had failed to protect the constitutional rights and aspirations of tribal communities, particularly in districts governed under special provisions such as Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. The party accused the Himanta Biswa Sarma–led government of making promises on tribal autonomy and development without delivering concrete results on the ground.
The Congress claimed that dissatisfaction was growing in the hill districts over land rights, governance, and representation, and said these issues would play a decisive role in the upcoming elections. Party leaders argued that the Sixth Schedule, which provides autonomy to tribal areas, had been weakened due to what they described as the state government’s indifferent approach.
Reiterating its confidence in a political comeback, the Congress said public sentiment across Assam was shifting in favour of change after nearly a decade of BJP rule. The party also indicated that it was working to strengthen coordination with opposition allies to mount a united challenge against the BJP.
In response, the BJP has maintained that it enjoys strong public support and has highlighted its development initiatives and governance record in both plains and hill districts. The ruling party has repeatedly rejected opposition allegations, asserting that it remains committed to safeguarding tribal rights and accelerating development in all regions of the state.
With the Assam Assembly elections less than a year away, political activity has intensified, with both the Congress and the BJP sharpening their campaigns and focusing on regional issues that are expected to influence voter sentiment.
