Ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, controversy has erupted over Assam’s recent delimitation exercise, with critics alleging it has reduced Muslim representation.
A report by Al Jazeera claims that Muslim-majority constituencies have dropped significantly after boundary changes, raising concerns of “gerrymandering.” Opposition parties like the Indian National Congress and All India United Democratic Front say the move weakens minority voting power.
However, the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma has defended the process, stating it was conducted fairly based on population data.
The issue is likely to remain a key flashpoint in the upcoming elections.
