A Nigerian national was arrested by Assam Police in Silchar town of Cachar district, while three local residents were taken into custody for allegedly providing him shelter, officials said on Thursday.
Police identified the foreign national as Emeka Asedo, who was apprehended from the Shillong Patty area during a routine verification drive. He reportedly failed to produce valid travel documents or proof of legal stay in India during questioning.
Following his detention, police launched an inquiry into his stay in the region. Investigations revealed that a few local individuals had allegedly assisted him with accommodation and logistics.
Acting on this information, police arrested three persons — Tinku Hussain Barbhuiya, Pinku Hussain Barbhuiya, and Robina Begum Barbhuiya — on charges of harbouring a foreign national without proper documentation. A woman from Mizoram, identified as Mal Danga, has also been detained for questioning in connection with the case.
Police sources said efforts are underway to ascertain the purpose of the Nigerian national’s presence in Silchar and to verify whether he has links to any wider network.
Officials added that strict legal action will be initiated against those found guilty under relevant provisions of law. The arrests come amid heightened surveillance by security agencies in Assam to track undocumented foreign nationals and prevent illegal activities.
