More than 150 people fell ill in a suspected case of food poisoning after attending a wedding feast in Assam’s Karbi Anglong, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at Pator Timung village under Bokoliaghat, where guests reportedly began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain a few hours after consuming food served at the event.
The affected individuals were rushed to nearby health centres, while some critically ill patients were referred to Diphu Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment. Health officials said most patients are currently stable.
Local authorities and medical teams responded swiftly as the number of patients surged, leading to overcrowding in hospitals in and around Diphu.
Officials have launched an investigation into the incident. Food samples from the wedding feast have been collected for testing to ascertain the exact cause, with initial suspicion pointing towards contamination.
Meanwhile, health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged people to maintain caution regarding food safety at large gatherings.
