5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Assam, Tremors Felt Across Northeast

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Assam and parts of the Northeast on Monday morning, triggering panic among residents but causing no immediate reports of major damage or casualties, officials said.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor occurred in the early hours, with its epicentre located in central Assam. The quake was felt across several districts of Assam and neighbouring states, prompting many people to rush out of their homes as a precaution.
Residents in cities including Guwahati, Silchar and nearby areas reported strong vibrations that lasted for a few seconds. In some places, ceiling fans and household items were seen swaying, leading to brief moments of panic.
Officials said authorities are closely monitoring the situation. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of significant loss of life or major structural damage. However, local administrations have been asked to remain alert and conduct field assessments where necessary.
The Northeast region falls under one of India’s highest seismic zones, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. Experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of earthquake-resistant construction and public preparedness in the region.
Emergency agencies have advised residents to stay calm but vigilant and to follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
