A brilliant century by Sibsankar Roy went in vain as Chandigarh registered a commanding seven-wicket victory over Assam in their Vijay Hazare Trophy match on Tuesday.
Batting first, Assam posted a competitive 284 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs at the Sanosara Cricket Ground. Sibsankar Roy anchored the innings with a superb unbeaten 106, displaying composure and clean strokeplay to hold the batting together. He was well supported by Saurav Dihingia (61) and skipper Sumit Ghadigaonkar (51), whose contributions helped Assam recover after a shaky start and set a challenging target.
However, Chandigarh’s chase was dominated by a massive opening partnership that took the game away from Assam. Arjun Azad played a sensational knock of 140, while skipper Manan Vohra struck a fluent 102, as the duo added 244 runs for the first wicket. Their aggressive yet controlled batting ensured Chandigarh stayed well ahead of the required run rate throughout the innings.
Chandigarh eventually reached the target at 286 for 3 in 47.2 overs, sealing a comfortable win and earning crucial points in the group stage of the tournament.
Despite Assam bowlers making late breakthroughs, the early damage proved too much to overcome. The defeat highlighted Assam’s struggles to defend a strong total, even after a standout individual performance from Roy.
Assam will look to regroup and address their bowling concerns ahead of their next fixture, while Chandigarh’s dominant performance further strengthened their position in the competition.
