Infiltration Spike Ahead of Polls Puts Assam, West Bengal on High Alert

Intelligence agencies have sounded an alarm over a sharp rise in illegal infiltration attempts along the India–Bangladesh border in Assam and West Bengal, raising concerns about possible disruptions to the ongoing Assembly election process.
According to official sources, there has been a noticeable increase in cross-border movement in recent weeks, with agencies suspecting that organised networks are attempting to exploit the pre-election period. The timing of the spike has prompted heightened vigilance, as authorities fear it could impact the law-and-order situation in poll-bound regions.
Security forces, including border guarding units and state police, have been directed to intensify surveillance across vulnerable stretches of the international border. Officials noted that infiltration attempts are often reported to rise during elections due to the diversion of security personnel for poll duties, creating potential gaps in monitoring.
The alert comes close on the heels of the recent detention of several suspected Bangladeshi nationals in Jalpaiguri, who were reportedly travelling with forged documents after entering through the Assam sector. Investigative agencies are probing possible trafficking and facilitation networks behind such movements.
Authorities highlighted that despite significant progress in border fencing, several stretches—particularly riverine and difficult terrain areas in Assam—remain susceptible to infiltration. These gaps are often exploited by human traffickers and illegal migration syndicates.
Addressing a recent rally in Assam, Narendra Modi reiterated concerns over illegal immigration, linking it to issues of security, demographic balance, and economic strain in the region.
Meanwhile, central and state agencies are coordinating closely to plug vulnerabilities, with additional deployment of personnel, stricter document verification, and enhanced monitoring systems being put in place.
Officials said the situation is being closely watched, with security agencies committed to ensuring that the electoral process proceeds without disruption.
