Tensions escalated in Nagaon on Saturday following multiple incidents of pre-poll violence, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (Congress) accusing each other of instigating unrest ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
According to local reports, unidentified miscreants set fire to two Congress campaign offices in the district, damaging party materials including banners and posters. Congress leaders alleged that their workers were being targeted and intimidated, and claimed that law enforcement agencies had failed to act promptly. The party has called on the Election Commission to intervene and ensure a level playing field.
In a separate incident, clashes were reported during a Congress campaign event, where at least two individuals sustained injuries. BJP supporters alleged that the attack was carried out by Congress workers. One of the injured individuals stated that he was assaulted despite not being actively involved in party activities.
The Congress, however, denied the allegations and countered that BJP workers were behind the violence, accusing the ruling party of attempting to disrupt opposition campaigns and influence voters through intimidation.
The district has witnessed a series of political confrontations in recent days, reflecting heightened tensions as campaigning intensifies. Observers note that Nagaon has become a key battleground in the ongoing elections, with both major parties vying for electoral advantage.
Security has been stepped up in sensitive areas, and authorities said they are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further escalation. Concerns remain that continued violence could affect voter turnout and the conduct of free and fair elections in the state.
