Kuki SoO Groups Disband Armed Wings Following Peace Pact in Assam
Guwahati, March 25: In a major boost to the peace process in Assam, Kuki militant outfits under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement have formally disbanded their armed wings after signing a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) with the Centre and the state government.
The three groups - Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA), United Kuki Defence Army (UKDA), and Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) -announced the dissolution of their armed organisations with effect from March 23.
The development follows the signing of the peace agreement on March 15, 2026, between the groups, the Government of India, and the Government of Assam, aimed at ending long-standing ethnic militancy in the region.
In a joint statement, the groups termed the agreement a “historic and transformative milestone,” marking their transition from armed struggle to democratic and peaceful means of engagement. They also called on both governments to ensure timely implementation of the pact’s provisions.
Officials said the settlement includes measures for rehabilitation of former cadres, socio-economic development of Kuki-inhabited areas, and steps to ensure lasting peace and stability.
The disbanding of these armed wings is being viewed as a significant breakthrough in Assam’s efforts to resolve insurgency-related issues and promote inclusive development across affected regions.
