Oppn’s seat-sharing tussle: Congress clears 9 seats for AJP amid Raijor Dal rift

The opposition alliance in Assam is witnessing fresh friction ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with the Congress finalising a seat-sharing formula with the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) even as talks with Raijor Dal remain strained.
Sources in the Congress said the party has agreed to allot nine Assembly constituencies to AJP, signalling that negotiations between the two sides are nearing closure. The constituencies reportedly include Hojai, Barhampur, Binnakandi, Bajali, Dibrugarh, Sarupathar, Guwahati Central, Sadiya and Palashbari, though minor adjustments may still be possible.
An AJP leader indicated that the party may also contest either Dhemaji or Morigaon if further seat adjustments are made during the final round of discussions.
However, opposition unity continues to face uncertainty due to differences with Raijor Dal. Party president Akhil Gogoi has maintained that his party is seeking around 15 seats and has cautioned against any unilateral decisions by Congress. He stressed that any alliance must be based on mutual respect and consensus, warning that sidelining Raijor Dal could weaken the anti-BJP front.
Political observers note that while the Congress–AJP understanding marks progress in opposition coordination, the unresolved rift with Raijor Dal could complicate efforts to build a cohesive alliance ahead of the crucial 2026 Assam Assembly polls.
