Assam Polls 2026: Home Voting Begins for Elderly & Divyang Voters

The home voting facility for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 commenced in Kamrup district on Monday, aiming to ensure greater electoral inclusion for elderly and differently-abled voters.
The special voting arrangement, which will continue till April 1, has been introduced for senior citizens aged 85 years and above, as well as persons with disabilities who are unable to visit polling stations. The initiative is being implemented under the supervision of the Election Commission of India as part of efforts to make the electoral process more accessible and participatory.
Polling teams comprising election officials and security personnel are visiting the homes of eligible voters across six assembly constituencies in the district. Voters who have opted for the facility are casting their ballots through postal ballot systems from the comfort of their residences.
Officials stated that all necessary protocols are being followed to maintain transparency and secrecy of voting. Political party representatives are also being allowed to observe the process to ensure fairness.
As part of the election preparedness, the district administration has already completed the second randomisation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units in the presence of election observers and party representatives.
The home voting initiative is being seen as a significant step toward strengthening inclusive democracy by enabling vulnerable sections of society to exercise their franchise without logistical challenges.
Polling for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly is scheduled to be held on April 9, with results to be declared on May 4.
